What is Work and Travel USA?

Work and Travel is a U.S. Department of State program created in the 60s for students from around the world who want to visit America during the summer. This program is open to university students who want to experience another culture and diversity. Work and Travel participants have a unique chance to experience the United States as more than just tourists, and to share their own traditions and culture with people from both the USA and abroad.
The Work & Travel USA program is the most popular and attractive summer student work program. The program is also known as the Cultural Exchange Visitor Program. More than 100,000 students from around the world participate in the Work & Travel program. Macedonian students have the right to participate in the program and stay in America for a period of 4-5 months during the summer student break.

The Work and Travel program, established and regulated by the U.S. Department of State, provides an easy, secure, and rewarding way for students to live and work in the United States during their summer break. It offers the chance to travel to incredible destinations, gain valuable work experience, form lasting friendships, and earn enough to cover living expenses in USA. This program is a unique opportunity to go beyond sightseeing and immerse yourself in American culture, experiencing life in the U.S. firsthand.

program duration

The program is available during students’ summer break, allowing a full time student, to work for up to four months from June until September. After completing the work period, students can enjoy an additional 30 days in the U.S. as tourists. Participants have the flexibility to choose their work duration— 3 to 4 months —based on their preferences.

Job Placement with American employer

Before applying for a J-1 visa and traveling to the USA, participants must secure a job placement with an American employer that meets the program’s specific requirements. Job placements can be arranged individually or through interviews organized by the sending agency. Job offers are in the field of hospitality industry, including but not limited to: hotels, restaurants, amusement parks, candy shops and sales in souvenir shops.

Eligibility and Reapplication

At the end of the program, participants are required to return to their home country. Full-time students can reapply for the program in subsequent summers.
